We can’t deny how much we LOVE grilling! In fact, according to Heart, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA), 72% of adults own a grill or smoker. 62% of those who use grills use gas as fuel. You actually have 2 options to power your gas grill, either with liquid propane (LP) or natural gas. While more than half gas grill users still prefer to use propane gas, more people are switching to natural gas. After all, there are lots of benefits and advantages of natural gas you can enjoy. You don’t even have to only use it with your grills since you can also use it to fuel your other machines and appliances.

So, if you’re wondering whether you should install gas pipelines or convert to natural gas appliances, I just might help you. Read on to know the facts, uses, benefits, and advantages of natural gas to help you decide.

Fair warning, this can be quite a long, yet, fun read. All of the benefits and uses I listed here is not only for personal use, but covers pretty much everyone. So, let’s start off with some of the interesting facts on what makes up natural gas and how it works

Quick Fun Facts of Natural Gas

Where it comes from

Natural gas is a natural resource coming from fossil fuel, produced from remains of plants and animals that existed millions of years ago. The remains of these plants and animals were covered deep beneath the earth’s surface and were subjected to heat compression under the rock and soil below. Natural gas is formed when the layers of decomposing plant and animal matters are exposed to so much heat and pressure under the earth’s surface. The remains then convert into natural gas from compression force. The newly formed natural gas then migrates into a new location. And since natural gas is composed of hydrocarbons, which are lighter than water and rock, they tend to move upwards. They’ll continue to move until they reach the surface or get trapped by an impermeable layer of rock.

What is its composition

The natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas mixture primarily composed of methane. It also contains small amounts of ethane, propane, pentane, and butane. It also has 0-20% of other hydrocarbons such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide or helium.

How it works

In order to deliver natural gas for commercial and residential use, gas plants drill thousands of feet underground to extract these resources. Natural pressure would usually force the gas upward out the drill hole. But with older deposits, companies use big wells and pumps to increase pressure and forces them out onto the surface for storage. These extracted gas should first then be processed before it can be used.

Although the process involved usually varies depending on the composition of the extracted gas, the main goal is to gather all of the natural gas and reduce carbon emissions. This is achieved by separating undesirable substances such as mercury and hydrogen sulfide.

As the gas travels, it requires compressors in the mid-stream line to pressurize and to re-pressurize the natural gas in the transmission line. In the process of transmission, the higher molecular weighted natural gas hydrocarbons are removed, to produce a BRITISH THERMAL UNIT (BTU) value between 950 and 1050 BTUs.

This is now the processed natural gas which is used by residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The processed gas is delivered through gas mains buried underground passing through smaller pipes connected to your house. Those pipes are connected with meters to measure your household’s usage.

What can it be used for

Being a fossil fuel it is a good source of energy for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. We can use it as fuel or as a major component in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. Cooking and grilling are now more convenient and economical with natural gas grills.

Who can use natural gas

As the use of natural gas has become more popular, several sectors have already taken advantage of using it. And so can you! Here’s a quick look at the various sectors of the economy that are already using natural gas as a source of energy.

  1. The electric power sector
  2. The industrial sector or the manufacturers
  3. The commercial sector such as malls, shopping centers, hotels & other commercial establishments
  4. The transportation sector, be it land, sea or air
  5. The residential sector

Quick Timeline of Natural Gas Development

According to history, the earliest users of natural gas were the Chinese way back in 500 BCE. In the Ziliujing District of Sichuan, they used natural gas to extract the salt. Natural gas was seeped from the ground and transported through bamboo used as a crude pipeline, where the salt water was boiled.

In 1825, the world’s first industrial extraction of natural gas was in Fredonia, New York. Till then, the use of natural gas started becoming more popular.

In the 19th century, natural gas did not have much commercial value. As a by-product of petroleum, it was simply burned at the oil field in a process called flaring. As the years go by, and with the demand for natural gas grew particularly in the United States, pipelines are constructed to transport from the wells to the consumers.

In fact, come 2009, the US has become the world’s largest producer of natural gas, even surpassing Russia. However, although the US leads the production of natural gas, it’s currently placed behind Russia, Iran, Qatar, and Turkmenistan in proved reserves of natural gas.

Nevertheless, due to the success of natural gas production in the US, they have a large supply of natural gas. This in effect made its consumer prices significantly lower than other countries such as Europe and Japan. Hence, it has become an affordable great source of fuel as well.

So since 2015, natural gas has become the second largest source of energy for the US and its demand continues to increase today. While presently, North America and Europe are major users of natural gas. Others living in the northern hemisphere are also natural gas users.

Benefits and Advantages of Natural Gas

#1 – Natural Gas is a Versatile Source of Power at Home

Natural gas is versatileNatural gas is not only applicable for grills. You can use it as an efficient source of energy to plenty of indoor and outdoor appliances, benefiting a lot of American households. It has many uses for your home that works as an effective solution to our various necessities such as heating water, cooling and heating homes, lighting a fire, drying clothes and cooking.

Some of the popular indoor and outdoor appliances and equipment you can use natural gas as a source of energy are as follows:

  • Clothe dryers
  • Fireplaces and logs
  • Air Conditioning unit
  • Furnaces
  • Stoves, ranges and ovens
  • Drain water heat recovery
  • Hot water boilers and heaters
  • Gas grills
  • Campfires
  • Heaters for homes, garages, patio and even your pool
  • Snow melting systems

#2 – Natural Gas offers Hassle-Free Usage

Natural gas has hassle-free benefitNatural gas is supplied through pipes to homes. So once it is hooked up, you can start enjoying your home appliances. You don’t have to go through the hassle of going to gas supply stores to refill as in the case of propane since this is piped into your home.

In addition, it pretty much works similarly convenient with electrically-powered appliances. But with the advantages of natural gas as a source of energy, you can still use and enjoy the comfort of your gas-powered appliances even during power outage.

There are all sorts of scenarios where you can really find natural gas-powered machines very handy! Such is the case for those who don’t want to do the tedious tasks of gathering firewood or dealing with sparks just to enjoy a nice fire. You also won’t have to worry about running out of fuel for your grill and get interrupted while cooking.

I’ve personally experienced running out of gas in the middle of grilling. Just imagine the horrors and hassles of that time! All of my family are over at my place. As I started grilling burgers, suddenly the fire went out. I really thought had spares at home, but the tanks were all out. I had to drive out few blocks to get those fuel, leaving my guests starving.

And funny thing during these circumstances, you usually find yourself unable to get things done quickly just when you’re actually in a hurry! There was light traffic and long queue before I could make my purchase. It was a huge bummer!

However, having a natural gas grill can prevent you from getting into such stressful situations.

#3 – Natural Gas has Consistent and Reliable Supply

Natural gas has reliable supplyNatural gas is not dependent on electric power. So as mentioned earlier, your natural gas-powered machines and tools will still work even when the electricity is out. The energy source has its own line connected directly to consumers’ system. And since the pipelines are buried underground, they cannot be damaged easily. Hence, you’ll have continuous power flow even in bad weather condition, in contrast to electricity or gas tanks. Because when storms come, you won’t have easy access in restocking gas tanks when they’re empty. While electric powers become prone to disruption under bad weather.

#4 – Abundant Domestic Production

Natural gas has lower toxic emissionsWith U.S. being the largest producer of natural gas, you won’t have to worry about running out of this energy anytime soon. After all, you have the guarantee of its abundant supply.

According to Potential Gas Committee, the U.S. has natural gas resources of  2,817 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) by the end of 2016. Combine that with proved gas reserves of 324 Tcf, as assessed by Energy Information Administration, will give you a total future supply of 3,141 Tcf of natural gas reserves and resources in the U.S. which is more than enough to meet America’s energy demands. Natural gas reserves stay bountiful and can last up to more than 100 years.

Furthermore, the abundance of natural gas is not just in the U.S.! Since natural gas is formed from organic matters from long ago, its supply is widely available practically anywhere! There are still a lot of fresh gas reserves in different parts of the world. This gives us an assurance that natural gas is available for many, many years to come.

But just a friendly reminder, even though there is a significant supply of natural gas, it is still a precious natural resource. We should not waste it and use it cautiously to conserve and preserve the future of our planet.

#5 – Natural Gas has an Enviable Safety Record

Natural gas has enviable safety recordWhile it’s true that you still don’t have the full protection against the dangers from using natural gas, strict measures are taken into action to ensure your security. These safety efforts contributed to approximately 40 percent decline in pipeline incidents over the past 10 years in a 2015 study of American Gas Association.

Natural gas appliances and accessories go through lots of rigorous testing. They should pass the required high standards for safety and performance before they are sold to the market. Contractors who will install these appliances are specially trained and licensed by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

Since natural gas is odorless, it is vulnerable to undetectable leakage that could lead to accidents and fire. However, a small amount of odorant or stenching agent, which usually smells like rotten eggs, is added to its mixture. This ensures consumers’ safety and allows early detection of leaks. Another way to detect leakage is through hearing a hissing sound and observing discoloration of vegetation, blowing dirt or bubbling water within the buried gas line

When there’s a detection of gas leak, make sure to stop using any tools or equipment that could spark a fire. Leave the premise immediately and call your technician for its repair.

On the bright side, if natural gas accidentally did escape into the air, it typically dissipates harmlessly and faster than other gases. Hence, natural gas really does feel safer to use. It now even tops the list as one of the safest and most efficient sources of energy for power generation and heating.

#6 – Natural Gas is Nicer to the Environment

Natural gas is nicer to environmentOne of the strongest benefits and advantages of natural gas is having lesser harmful effects to the environment. Natural gas is the best among fossil fuels when we talk of clean burning. It emits lower carbon fuel with almost zero pollutant particles. Since the combustion process of natural gas is almost perfect,  the level of pollutant byproducts disseminated to the environment is minimal. Hence, the environment is exposed to lesser toxic emissions from burning natural gas than other fuel. Furthermore, using natural gas eliminates any need for gas storage tanks. Thus, wipes out the risk of soil contamination, oil spills and unplanned and expensive contamination clean-up of the environment.

Luckily for us, with the use of natural gas gaining popularity, many grill brands such as Weber, Dyna-Glo, Napoleon and more, have started manufacturing grills fueled with it. Because of that, we now have the option to buy the best natural gas grills that can still suit everyone’s cooking needs. Each model has its own innovations to offer distinctive features from the BTU per hour produced, grilling capacity, temperature setting and control and etc. These grills allow us to still enjoy an awesome barbecue and be an advocate for the environment by using clean gas, thereby reducing pollution.

#7 – Natural Gas has Lower Toxic Emissions than Coal or Oil

Natural gas has lower toxic emissionsInasmuch as natural gas burns more cleanly as compared to oil and coal, it follows that it produces less carbon dioxide per unit of energy released. It approximately has 30% lower emission of carbon dioxide than burning oil and 45% lesser than burning coal. Hence, it undeniably gives off cleaner air.

It also releases lower amounts of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and mercury as compared to coal and oil.

#8 – Natural Gas is also Less Harmful to Our Health

Natural gas is less harmful to healthWe already know that natural gas is clean burning, more so than other fossil fuels. It emits lower levels of harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases to the environment, more importantly, to our health. Harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are present from burning coal, oil and other gases. Not to mention, burning these fuels will lead to having ashes and particulates mix into the air. And when we frequently and repetitively inhale these harmful emissions and particulates, it can be detrimental to our health. Hence, natural gas is not only environment-friendly but is also nicer to our health.

On the other hand, burned natural gas won’t be poisonous or harmful to humans whether there’s a low or high exposure to it since it’s non-toxic. And although grilling produces a lot of smoke, we are confident that its emissions are compliant with the Clean Air Act. Therefore, we are confident that even with frequent grilling, there won’t be grave negative effects to our health when we take advantage of natural gas grills. Enjoying a nice grill will never be at the expense of our health, except getting too fat from too much barbecue (lol).

#9 – Natural Gas can help improve Indoor Air Quality and Comfort

Natural gas improves indoor air qualityA majority of us believe that indoor air in our homes is cleaner than the outdoor air. However, it’s not entirely true. Even if we presume to keep the outdoor air from entering our home will not guarantee for indoor air to maintain clean. After all, we can also unconsciously producing pollutants inside our homes. Such cases are due to home’s structure, painting, carpet, furnishings, gas emissions and more.

Daily activities such as cooking and heating with kerosene heaters are the common producers of high levels of indoor pollutants. Luckily for us, having natural gas cooking stoves, or other natural gas appliances for that matter can help improve indoor air quality due to lesser emissions of greenhouse and harmful gases.

Nevertheless, you need a proper venting system for all fuel-burning appliances. Bringing enough outdoor air to dilute indoor pollutants and vent them out the house is an efficient way to improve indoor air quality. Another is through the use of humidifiers. Wherein natural gas humidifiers are now available to install in our homes or even commercial spaces.

Maintaining proper humidity level indoors is also important because too little or too much moisture can be harmful. In some instances, exposure to dry air increase risk to colds, viral infections and even aggravate asthma and other respiratory conditions. It can also cause adverse effects to electronic equipment and damage to some products. According to American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers or ASHRAE, the optimum standard of relative humidity level for indoor air quality is between 40% and 60%. With natural gas humidifiers, gas burners heat water into steam. The steam is then distributed throughout the surrounding area which in effect will moisturize the air.

Like the others, a natural gas humidifying system is also more expensive than electric ones. However, its operating cost is still 75% way lower which will allow you to actually save more and recover the upfront expense for less than a year. Hence, with Natural gas humidifiers, they are a cost-efficient way to improve indoor air quality while producing lesser toxic emissions when in use at the same time.

#10 – Natural Gas-Powered Engines have Longer Life

Natural gas provides longer life for engineChoosing natural gas appliances has become an easy way to reduce pollution impacts to the environment without sacrificing utility, comfort and style. However, natural gas-powered units are undeniably and commonly require more expensive costs upfront. Nevertheless, you are actually saving more with them in the long run since they tend to live longer. This is still all thanks to its clean burning attribute.

Burning cleaner fuels would leave lesser soot and residues in these natural gas engines and appliances. These soot and residues from burning other fuels could contaminate the ignition procedure of the machinery and degrade its quality after each use, especially when not properly cleaned and maintained. Hence, natural gas-fueled engines and appliances can potentially have a more valuable lifespan.

Same goes for natural gas grills. Considering it burns cleanly, they don’t leave behind any unpleasant soot, ash, or odors. So, you can expect more grilling seasons from it than average grills. This is a real treat for those who are fond of cooking and grilling. You can avoid the hassle of having to look for new machines year after year. Instead, you can expect to make more memories with these machines as they’ll stay with you for long years to come.

#11 – Natural Gas provides More Savings

Natural gas provides more savingsIn support of government’s Climate Change Action Plan, the cap-and-trade program is formed to limit the allowed amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted from homes and businesses. This program also covers natural gases. In effect, most suppliers charge the extra costs for lowering GHG to end users, increasing the price to pay for using it. However, the cap-and-trade program also covers automotive gasoline, diesel, heavy fuel oils, petroleum and propane. Since natural gas is proven to burn cleaner, this results in lower cap-and-trade costs! So even with the added cap-and-trade cost, natural gas still has the cheapest price for energy.

And considering the law of demand and supply in our economy, the price of natural gas becomes very affordable due to its abundant supply. Especially in the U.S. where production is at large and supply is easily and readily available for distribution.

There is also little, to almost no, fluctuation in the price of natural gas. While gasoline prices are unstable and volatile. Prices are at times dictated by the world market and exposed to significant events affecting the oil-producing countries and oil price. The scarcity of gasoline supply also jacks up the price. Hence, some trucking companies have shifted from diesel to natural gas.

Despite the stable pricing and its actual low price, many people still find it difficult to switch to natural gas appliances right away. Mostly because these type of appliances tend to be more expensive than regular ones. But again, despite this costly investment upfront, the low operating cost of natural gas will let you save more in the long run. Most natural gas units cost less money to operate than electric and even propane gas appliances.

Moreover, most machines fueled with it are efficient and consumes lesser energy. For example, natural gas usually heats up faster than electricity. Thus, you get to heat water, stove or grill at lesser time and energy consumption. The same goes with using clothes dryers. Studies show that two loads of laundry in a natural gas dryer are equivalent to the cost of one load of laundry in an electric dryer. That’s about 50% savings! In the end, you save even more money and do more productive things with your time.

Having realized the potential savings you can make as one of the advantages of natural gas, it started gaining popularity and more users.

#12 – Natural Gas Requires Minimal Maintenance

Natural gas requires minimal maintenanceCommercial businesses that use CNG engines will find its maintenance items such as spark plug replacements and valve adjustments to be more affordable than those with diesel emission controls. With soaring gas prices and the stricter environmental requirements for clean air over the next years, the maintenance cost gap for natural gas and other energy sources will surely further widen.

Regular upkeep is a must to keep all your equipment and appliances in tip-top shape. But since equipment that burns cleaner fuel will also require less maintenance and repairs over the years. You also avoid having to clean up after soot and ashes from using coal or wood to fire up your grill, furnaces or fireplace. While maintaining the gas pipelines is also a must to prevent any problems from corrosion, leakage and blocked the passageway. Keeping the portion of the pipelines connected to the house well-maintained won’t even take up too much of your time and will mostly take years for you to re-apply the upkeep.

I have here some tips on maintaining your portion of gas pipelines. If you have any portion of gas piping exposed to outdoor elements, make sure to coat the exposed area with a paint. This helps prevent corrosion, while the coat will take years before it needs another repainting job. You should also keep the connection and appliances’ air intake and exhaust vents clear. This will prevent blockage in the ventilation or exhaustion of gas combustion that could interrupt gas supply. Lastly, periodically schedule a certified professional to inspect the pipes and appliances to ensure safety and immediately repair any unsafe conditions.

#13 – Natural Gas Increases Resale Value of Your Home

Natural gas increases resale value of home

One criterion for prospective house owners is the availability of power sources. With the gaining popularity of natural gas, the demand for houses with natural gas connection also increases.

Hence, having a house that is already ready for natural gas usage makes it more attractive and more useful in the eyes of prospective buyers. They don’t have to go through the hassle of coordinating to a gas supplier to install pipelines. And once the pipeline is already installed in your house, it already becomes a lot easier to buy and use natural gas-powered appliances.

#14 – Natural Gas generates Clean Power for Electric Utilities

Natural gas for clean power electric utilityThe electric industry largely uses coal to generate electricity supplied to our homes. As a result, electric utilities release one of the highest carbon footprints to the environment and the most polluting sector in the United States. Luckily, the availability of natural gas makes it a great alternative source of power for electric generators too. Allowing large electric power plants to switch to using natural gas while still being an affordable cost of fuel for clean generation of electricity and lessening environmental damage.

In April 2015, electricity is said to have surpassed coal in producing 31% of nation’s electricity over coal’s 30%. Electricity is generated through the use of gas and steam turbines. Since natural gas burns cleaner than oil and coal, it produces less carbon dioxide per unit of energy released. It emits 30% lesser carbon dioxide than burning oil and 45% lesser than burning coal. It also releases lower amounts of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and mercury. These allow electric utilities to also benefit from the advantages of natural gas while reducing environmental damage in producing electricity to supply for our homes.

#15 – Natural Gas has lots of Industrial Use

Natural gas has multi usage for industriesNatural gas is not only exclusive for residential and commercial use. It also has a multitude use for the industrial sector. Cost efficiency is one of the advantages of natural gas for industries. And since you can already use natural gas to provide electricity, some industries use it to run their factories instead of buying it outside for an additional expense.

Industrial sector mostly use natural gas as a fuel for heating processes and combining heat and power systems. Heating processes may involve firing boilers, heating metals, baking and drying commodities to produce products such as steel, paper, glass and food. Aside from using natural gas for actual operations, natural gas also has the base ingredients for varied products like fertilizer, anti-freeze agents, plastics, pharmaceuticals and fabrics. Natural gas can also produce a wide range of chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, butane, ethane,  propane, and acetic acid.

Natural gas has a multitude use for industries that it continues to gain popularity and increase in usage. In U.S. alone, the industrial sector already covers more than 30% of total U.S. energy consumption in 2011. While common industrial operations that use natural gas are glass and steel foundries, aluminum and nickel smelters, cement, bricks, ceramics, tiles, paper and food product manufacturing.

#16 – Natural Gas has Methane to Produce Hydrogen

Natural gas produces HydrogenNatural gas has methane component that can produce hydrogen through steam reforming process. Methane source goes through high-temperature steam of about 700°C to 1000°C to produce hydrogen.

However, to be honest, natural gas is not entirely the best option to use in producing hydrogen. Because in the process of producing hydrogen, carbon dioxide also becomes a by-product of natural gas. They can escape to the atmosphere as a global warming gas.

While you can also use other fuels such as ethanol, propane, or even gasoline to produce hydrogen, natural gas still has lower emissions. And it is still by far the cheapest fossil fuel source for producing hydrogen. As a result, natural gas continues to become a popular choice that it now makes up 95% of the hydrogen production in the United States.

So why does it even matter if natural gas can produce hydrogen? Let’s just say that being able to abundantly produce hydrogen, at an affordable price even, gives us easier and cheaper access to all uses and applications of hydrogen as well. You can use hydrogen for refining petroleum, treating metals, producing electricity, manufacturing fertilizer, processing foods and even fuel rocket ships!

#17 – Natural Gas can make Fertilizers that leads to Positive Impacts

Natural gas produces FertilizerThere’s been growing demands for fertilizers and natural gas seems to fit in the equation. Since we already know that natural gas can produce hydrogen, which we use to manufacture fertilizers. Hence, fertilizer plants use natural gas more than just a fuel, but also as the main ingredient in making ammonia-based fertilizers.

Ammonia is the major component for the production of nitrogen fertilizers. Ammonia production involves a combination of 82% nitrogen and 18% hydrogen. Wherein nitrogen (N2) comes from the air and the hydrogen (H) comes from natural gas. Initially, water is the main source for hydrogen. But the energy-intensive electrolysis process used to make ammonia from water is expensive.

So ammonia plants have shifted to a cheaper source, the use of natural gas. More so, a large portion of the energy required to combine nitrogen gas and hydrogen comes from natural gas.

Now, natural gas accounts for 72 to 85 percent of the cost of producing ammonia. Ammonia prices have been closely correlated with natural gas prices, especially since 2000. And since U.S. has a domestic production for natural gas, it’s cheaper for plants to produce nitrogen fertilizers locally.

In effect, producers of nitrogen fertilizers will have a competitive price to offer locally and potentially capture a market share in global trading. This will also put pressure on import prices for fertilizers to decrease. Lower fertilizer prices will then greatly benefit the agriculture sector and in turn, can also lower food prices to consumers due to reduced costs of inputs. Overall, there will be positive impacts on the American agriculture and economy.

#18 – Natural Gas is a Clean Fuel for Vehicles

Natural gas for Clean Vehicle FuelNatural gas is not just a fixed source of energy connected to homes, factories and such. Transportation sector can also take advantage of its benefits.

Cities, roads and streets are now overpopulated with moving vehicles. In each moving car is burning gas that produces air pollution. With so many vehicles traveling today, just imagine how much pollutants and emissions are being released into the environment, which by the way, also end up in our lungs!

Obviously, there’s no way for us to stop using cars altogether. But, we can minimize these emissions since natural gas can now also power vehicles. In fact, the emissions from these vehicles are five times less harmful than cars equipped with gasoline engines.

Since natural gas has simpler molecular structure, they burn more completely in an engine. There’ll be less carbon monoxide, soot, and unburned hydrocarbons coming out from the tailpipe. California Air Resources Board (CARB) also concluded that there are 20-29% less greenhouse gas emissions than its gasoline and diesel counterparts.

The methane component of natural gas can usually work as the fuel for natural gas vehicles. In order to do that, methane is pressurized to produce compressed natural gas (CNG). You can also use liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is better for long-distance travel because its liquid form is denser which allows better storage.

While the driving range for natural gas vehicles is lesser due to car’s lower storage capacity, your car’s horsepower, acceleration and speed stay the same. It will still run very much like the conventional cars we’re more familiar with. On the other hand, it’s better at keeping your car in good condition.

Clean air is not only good for us but also essential to your car engine’s longevity. Methane engines tend to live longer since they burn cleaner than gasoline or diesel. They eliminate soot and are almost incapable of forming smog. This in turn can prevent soot build-up and mixing sediments in the fuel system while burning.

Natural gas vehicles allow you to also still enjoy the price advantage of its fuel and consumption efficiency. While producing better air quality is the most solid reason for transportation sector to shift to this trend.

#19 – Natural Gas minimizes Foreign Dependency

Natural gas minimizes foreign dependencyNatural gas can help reduce dependency on foreign imports because, as discussed earlier, it provides a reliable alternative for fuel instead of coals, oil and electricity. As well as a flexible ingredient in the production of our essentials such as fertilizers and diesel.

Although natural gas won’t decrease our foreign dependency by a large margin, it’s evidently declining each year. In fact, in 2010, our dependency on oil was already less than 50% of the oil our nation consumed and the downward trend seems to continue over the next years.

Having a more stable country, boosting economic growth, lower fuel costs and oil supplies remain available are just some of things we can achieve when foreign dependency decreases. And natural gas is playing a small part to do that.

#20 – Natural Gas helps the Economy Grow

Natural gas promotes economic growthThe advent of technology has unlocked the presence of natural gas in the U.S. to fuel the nation for generations. The use of natural gas reduces our dependence on foreign supplies and at the same time create job opportunities in this field. Increasing demand for this resource will also require more manpower, which means more job positions to fill. Having more job opportunities will provide people to generate income. More income will lead to higher spending. And higher consumption will mean growth for the economy.

While the demand for natural gas is increasing in the US, a bulk of its production also comes from the USA. Thus, natural gas definitely paves the way in creating more American jobs. Which in turn will eventually help grow the U.S. economy further! We can expect this to continue positively. After all, about 85% of natural gas consumed from all other parts of the world actually comes from U.S. as well. So, the demand for the US to provide natural fuel and in turn create more jobs to sustain production will very unlikely to decrease.

#21 –  Natural Gas provides Precision in the Cooking

Natural gas has precision in cookingOne of the most important and popular uses of natural gas is in cooking. Even professional cooks highly recommend it as fuel. And that’s not just due to its cheaper price, but for its precision in cooking and baking.

Natural gas provides even heat, instant on and off settings and outstanding temperature control for that cooking precision of every dish. It can even generate temperatures over 2000OC for your cooking needs. Nothing can also be more precise in cooking when you know you won’t encounter any interruptions while in the middle of your cooking. Since there are dishes that are time and heat sensitive, that stopping halfway in your cooking could ruin their texture and taste.

An additional benefit of natural gas in the kitchen is its efficiency. It enables energy and dollar savings, as compared to using electric cooktops and ovens. The BTU output of the grills also enables them to heat up quickly, control cooking temperature and faster cooling.

You can no doubt achieve those deep sears, savory taste and beautiful marks with your best natural gas grills. Grilling becomes much more fun and satisfying.

#22 – Natural Gas is Energy Efficient

Natural gas is energy efficientNatural gas appliances like gas dryers and water heaters use lesser energy. They can also get hotter and heat up twice as fast than electric appliances. Due to its efficiency, you get to save more money aside from its actual lower fuel cost. According to DOE, you can save up to $1,200 on space heating and more than $250 on water heating costs annually with natural gas appliances.

The process of delivering this energy to us, consumers, is also less wasteful. Because 90% of natural gas that goes through the pipeline actually reaches our home. In that process, it only loses 10% of the energy. As for the electricity, only 30% of its supply actually reaches the consumer, and loses 70% during transmission and distribution. Hence, we are already able to conserve our natural resources better even before we get to use it.

#23 – Natural Gas is the Energy for the Future

Natural gas is the energy of the futureNatural gas is a boon to the nation that we continue to find more ways to use it. Various sectors are already using it from transportation, industrial, commercial, power generation and to residential. These are all thanks to its versatility, cost savings, reliability and efficiency.

Gas companies are discovering methods of transporting cheap liquid natural gas, and eventually to reach new markets without those expensive pipelines.

There is a growing number of vehicles using compressed natural gas as vehicle fuel.  Scientists are working on ways to extract the potentially vast amounts of natural gas reserves trapped beneath the ocean in gas hydrates.

Being cost-efficient and a clean alternative fuel for many, only time will tell when you start seeing natural gas spaceships and rockets blasting off! After all, methane engines for rockets are now in the works and being tested.

Using methane engines can also reduce costs of each science mission. Because we can harvest methane, which is the main component of natural gas, from other planets like Mars and moons. This will open more opportunities for tapping more resources and further exploring the space and universe.

Natural gas has vast potential and resources waiting to be explored. Technological breakthroughs are the keys for tapping its potential.

And as we continue to discover more of its uses due to its great potential, the demand for this resource grows. Nevertheless, those growing demands are sustainable with its large supply and still plenty of untapped gas reserves.

This energy is very useful and won’t run out anytime soon. Hence, it is not a remote possibility that it will be the energy for the future.

#24 – Natural Gas can Beautify You without Turning the Environment Uglier

Natural gas for BeautificationLet me just first say that natural gas doesn’t literally can make you more beautiful. Not as if you ever need more beautifying, eh (*wink, *wink). Creepy jokes aside, natural gas certainly does have components in making cosmetics and personal care products that answer to our vanity!

Although some of the chemicals that go into these products can be quite toxic, we simply can’t help but still use them. We like to look good in front of people. And I’m no exception since I’m probably just as vain as my partner. But she still definitely takes a lot longer to prepare for our night out (lol).

Anyway, while natural gas isn’t entirely harmless to the environment, to say the least. Natural gas has small components of Butane, Isobutane and Propane. They are better replacements for chlorofluorocarbons or CFC propellants that have adverse effects on the environment. These ingredients are great alternatives to keeping the ozone layer safe.

At the same time, they are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) with FDA approval based on the assessment of Cosmetic Ingredient Review, which was also reaffirmed back in 2002.

And since these gases are volatile, they quickly vaporize. They barely make contact with the skin for no longer than 10 seconds. Hence, they tend to cause lesser skin problems. And it has a low potential to cause fire as they don’t stay long in the air to accumulate.

On a fair note though, there are still hazards and health risks to be wary of. Not to mention, isobutane has allergens. So, I advise proper caution when using cosmetic products with these ingredients. Do a little quick test first with your compatibility with them. Finally, make sure to use them in a well-ventilated room and avoid breathing its vapors directly. Nevertheless, they don’t pose lasting health problems.

These natural gas components have foaming agents and solvent properties. So, you’ll usually find these ingredients in shaving creams, mousses, cleansing products, hair conditioners, cosmetics and aerosol hairsprays.

#25 – Using Natural Gas Lets You Feel Good

Natural gas lets you feel goodOkay, so this may sound more like a bonus. But seriously, with so many benefits and advantages of natural gas, simply using it will definitely make you feel good. No BS. You can think of various scenarios of using it and you’ll find yourself satisfied and happy with the experience.

For one, you get to avoid feeling stressed out from running out of fuel while in the middle of cooking. Another example is being able to grill all you want and know that the fuel you use is better for the environment, which is already rewarding in itself. And if you’re all about being thrifty, natural gas is still your answer due to its lower price and usage efficiency.

Anything beneficial to us, whether it is natural gas or not, will always have positive effects on us mentally and emotionally. So it’s no surprise to feel happy and proud whenever you use it.

Rounding Up

Natural gas has so many benefits and uses. It’s not just strictly for powering machines and engines but also has useful ingredients to create more other helpful stuff.

However, natural gas is not always rainbows and butterflies. Natural gas still presents risk and disadvantages that we should also be aware of. It’s not entirely the safest and purely harmless for the environment.

Thus, we still have to be extra careful in handling how we use natural gas. Not only individually but also for manufacturers that use it for big productions and for their operations. Everyone shouldn’t also be wasteful of this resource. Nevertheless, it suffices to say that the uses, benefits and advantages of natural gas definitely outweigh the bad.

And before you know it, the wonders of natural gas is already part of our daily lives. From eating, cooking, using gadgets and equipment, one way or another, natural gas is used in the process. I, on the other hand, personally like to use it for cooking.

And since we’re speaking of cooking, my fitting equipment for this is of course – a grill! And we’re now lucky enough that we get to enjoy the benefits and advantages of natural gas in grilling.

Natural gas grills tend to be more expensive than its Liquid propane counterparts. Yet most of the time, the difference in price isn’t too big. And while there’s a little more upfront expense, every usage allows me to save more. The fuel itself is cheaper and consumption is more efficient. Every savings I make, I can allow a little more extra for more meat and booze!

Just a quick note though, I have a sister who already has her own children. I’m proud to say, her children really love me, partly because they see me as their playmate. I a kid at heart after all. When I ask them to come over for a barbecue, my nephew & niece would always like to come close and see me grill. Because of that, they’re unknowingly exposing themselves to toxic emissions from burning gas. Obviously, having the best natural gas grill around helps a lot in this situation.

Since these grills emit 60-90% less smog-producing pollutants, there’s less exposure to toxic emissions. I can also manage to cook quite healthier foods due to less harmful particles that will coat the food from burning coals.

Here are just some of the plenty benefits natural gas can offer you. It also becomes easier to add more natural gas appliances once you install the gas pipelines in your home. So for those who have not yet owned one, it is still not too late. There’s so much potential with natural gas. It is by far the best choice among the fossil fuel energy sources from all aspects.

How about you, guys? How do you feel about using natural gas as your main source of fuel for your daily routines? I’d love to hear them out!

Whatever seasons come and go, one thing we, Americans, will definitely never get tired of – having a good old-fashioned barbecue! Whether it’s in your very own backyards or quaint balconies of your apartments, it’s pretty awesome how much experience and memories we can get from a well-cooked homemade burger or steak. In fact, the best times we had with our loved ones are those shared over delectable grilled treats! Looking back, most epic moments come from my happy childhood memories of big family barbecues, or hazy summer parties with friends. It just goes to show how grilling is more than just cooking a piece of meat. It’s a bonding experience that becomes a huge part of our lives. There’s no better way to enjoy grilling, but through savoring mouth-watering dishes together with all of your peers, all made possible by having the best gas grills under 300 bucks!

First of all, let’s get one thing clear. In this price range, you won’t get all the bells and whistles of what a gas grill can do. Because features like built-in rotisseries or separate searing station are usually present among beast machines worth $1000 and above price point. While specs like these are really cool, it certainly doesn’t affect your daily cooking needs. So what can you get from a $300 budget? You get a freaking awesome grill with all the must-have features such as high heat power, bigger cooking capability and best of all, solidly built.

If you’ll notice, grills in this price range are made with better materials with a fuller body, as opposed to the cart-style built we often see between $100 and $200 price range. Manufacturers at this point, aren’t really pressured to find the most budget-friendly materials and construction methods to achieve a really affordable gas grill. In other words, with 300 dollar gas grills, designers are given a lot more wiggle room to create well-featured gas grills that are pretty much made to last. You, on the other hand, get to throw bigger parties, enjoy better grilling experience and show off your cooking prowess while still keeping your wallet happy.

With $300 budget, you can surely get yourself a spanking new unit that could last several grilling seasons. However, shopping today becomes a lot trickier due to overwhelming choices. Plus, there are still manufacturers that skimp out on quality over price. So, unfortunately, there’s still a good chance that a lot of us could end up getting confused and buy the wrong thing.

But hey, no worries! My guide today hopes to fix this common consumer conundrum in finding the best gas grills under 300 dollars. Even I had quite a hard time narrowing down the list that I ended up with 4 choices. Nevertheless, they have their own characteristics that make them attractive for a specific need. I’m sure you’ll also find your grilling fix among them!

The Top Gas Grill Picks and Reviews

Weber Q2200 Liquid Propane Gas Grill

I’m kicking off the reviews with one of the most reputable brands in the grilling scene, Weber. Owning a Weber truly makes you feel like you’re a step closer to becoming a renowned grill master! The key word there is “feel”. But seriously though, it’s rare to see a Weber with a cheap price tag. Most of the time, you’ll have to shell out more money just to own one. Hence, you have to be more seriously committed to grilling to spend that much. So, owning a Weber for just under 250 bucks surely sounds a sweet deal to me.

However, what we have here is not a full-sized grill, but actually a portable type. I would recommend this to those living in the city, who don’t have enough space or who aren’t allowed to accommodate large grills at home. And if you enjoy having barbecues at the park, then the more you’ll also love having one of these. I’m talking about the Weber Q2200. It’s incredibly compact and perfect to place on any kitchen counter.

The Weber Q2200 is perfect for feeding a family or a small, intimate gathering. And despite its small physique, the Weber Q2200 Liquid Propane Grill can definitely perform to please even the fussiest grillers. Its one stainless steel burner produces 12,000 BTU’s of heat across its respectable 280 square inches of cooking area. That’s more than enough to cook 8 quarter pound burgers in one go.

Honestly for me though, its heat efficiency is a little low for the size. So, getting it hot up to 500-550 degrees may take a bit longer to achieve, still doable though. You might just have to preheat this thing for about 10-15 minutes and there you go! While heating it up over 300 degrees is pretty fast and easy-peasy. You can still have your favorite steaks and burgers perfectly seared inside. You can taste the flavor and feel its juiciness on every bite, aww, just so good! On the other hand, its lower BTU Rating means the Weber Q2200 consumes lesser fuel. Your gas canisters won’t quickly run out, and so is the life of your party!

Its porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates give you a durable cooking surface that evenly distributes heat. While the cast aluminum lid and body is perfectly lightweight but resistant to the elements to keep it portable at 42 pounds and durable at the same time! The only downside though, aluminum doesn’t retain heat as effectively as cast iron. Weber had to compromise a bit for the lighter frame. But hey, it’s not a big downer, really. Just make sure to shut the lid quickly every time you flip or rotate your food so the heat won’t get out and keep the temperature still. Oh and by the way, it also has tall a lid, so it’s cool as you don’t have to stick with just grilling boring hotdogs and stuff. You can up the game and grill small roasts and birds.

Once you buy the Q2200, the best part is that it comes completely assembled right out of the box. No more darn headaches, mate, you can go straight to grilling! There’s an easy-start electronic ignition that promises you a quick start-up with every push. It also has infinite control burner valve settings for surefire personal grilling experience. You also get 2 fixed handy side shelves for storing your plates, sauces, marinades, cooking utensils, and your meats.

Depending on your cooking needs, the Weber Q2200 has an interchangeable grate to give you an ideal surface for your desired dish. You can easily replace the default grill with any of the Q2000 series compatible cooking grates that are sold separately. This gas grill runs on liquid propane cylinders but you can actually switch to a gas tank if you also purchase the additional accessory of an LP Adapter Hose. This definitely emphasizes that big things come in small packages like this.

And if you have more extra cash, you can also invest on the Weber 6557 Q Portable Cart, which is sold separately. The Weber Q2200 fits perfectly well on that cart, so it can stand on its own and makes moving it around the house a lot easier! While it’s all up to you whether to buy it or not in the future, the cart is a useful accessory for additional convenience. Buying them together, though, could also save you a bit more.  Nevertheless, the Weber Q2200 is a superb, portable piece on its own that can fire up your grilling game even without the cart.

Here’s a Quick Recap of Weber Q2200 Gas Grill’s Sizzling Features

  • One stainless steel burner produces 12,000 BTU-per-hour
  • 280 sq. in. total cooking area
  • Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates and cast aluminum lid and body
  • Fully assembled out of box
  • Easy-start electronic ignition and infinite control burner valve settings
  • Uses disposable 14.1 or 16.4 oz. LP cylinder (sold separately)

What I like

  • Very portable
  • Has decent cooking area despite the size
  • Has its own side table despite being a tabletop grill

What I don't like

  • Might be tough to get past 500 degrees especially in a very windy condition

Fuego Element F21C Carbon Steel Gas Grill

Moving up to a slightly bigger in size and a free-standing grill, we got the Fuego Element F21C. The first thing you’ll notice is its sleek and unique design. Doesn’t it look more like a rocket ship to you!? Kidding aside though, its futuristic vibe sure looks stunning. Well, here’s a fun fact for you! The Fuego Element was actually designed by former Apple Chief Designer Robert Brunner in California. It even won the Vesta’s Best Gas BBQ & Spark Design Award, so you can be sure you’re in good hands with this one. With all the big fuss on its design, it would seriously be cool to have a piece of that. It will surely make an easy conversation starter for your party. Aside from killer looks though, Fuego also throws knock-out punches when it comes to features.

Fuego Element F21C is a compact gas grill with more mobility thanks to its sturdy base wheels. This is highly recommended for people who prefer bigger grill but live in homes with more limited space. The body only takes up a compact 21” by 21” footprint which allows for easy storage and takes only a little bit of space. And once you get you get your hands on this, putting it together is pretty quick and easy since it only has 14 screws to figure out. While for a really handy person, it could even take less than 30 minutes to assemble.

Now for the hotter topic. Fuego also doesn’t lack in the cooking power department. In fact, it produces a fire distribution rating of 21,000 BTU’s per hour burner system that’s suitable for 50 20-minute cooking cycles. It can also get to a temperature of 500F within 5 minutes and go up to a bit over 650F in full blast if you need it to. It, however, did fall a bit short in even cooking as there’s a cooler spot at the center of grill compared to its edge.

Regardless, we can easily turn around this sitch with a simple shifting technique. Start cooking your food thoroughly in the middle then finish them off with a good crisp and brown color by switching them to the edge of the grill. You can also use the colder spots like a warming rack but it’s handier for an indirect cooking. Indirect cooking is actually one of the important skills you ought to learn to be a better grill master. Once you get the hang on its cold spots, you will eventually find it useful for your grilling.

This unit has its very own built-in lid thermometer to help you monitor its temperature. But you can’t beat having an actual meat thermometer for best accuracy. Fuego F21C also sports a snazzy 15-pound porcelain enamel cast iron grate, which is a solid material by the way. It has better heat retention and provides a massive heat sink for those delicious looking sear marks. Despite the small footprint it takes up, the cooking surface itself is an admirable 346 square inches. That’s about an ideal size for cooking 12 quarter pounds or 4.5” diameter burgers.

To save you a lot of time when you want to grill, the Fuego Element F21C has a push-button electronic ignition for that instant startup. The gas tank fits so easily and seamlessly into the tank storage with a nifty hinged tank storage access door. After grilling, there’s an easy clean residue tray that you can pull out and clean up. Afterwards, you can just easily roll the F21C into its storage space. Best of all, if you already have a natural gas source installed, the Fuego can be readily converted to a natural gas grill. You’ll just have to specially order the conversion kit from the company and have them install it for you for your safety.

When they say there are always more than meets the eye, that appears to also be true for Fuego. It’s not just one heck of a stunning piece of machine, but it also packs quite the punch. The Fuego Element F21C has high heat power, large cooking surface, and solidly built. And while it comes in a small package, it no doubt performs just as badass as other expensive larger grills. So it’s no surprise why we’ll bet our money on it for the best gas grills under 300 dollars.

Here’s a Quick Recap of Fuego Element F21C Gas Grill’s Sizzling Features

  • Designed by former Apple Chief Designer Robert Brunner
  • Winner of Vesta’s Best Gas BBQ and Spark Design Award
  • 21,000 BTU/hr. burner system good for up to 50 (20 minutes) cooking cycle
  • Reaching temperatures of 500F in just 5 mins & up to 650F
  • 346 sq. in. cooking surface
  • 15lb porcelain-enamel cast iron grate for amazing sear marks
  • Compact 21” x 21″ footprint perfect for small patio/balcony
  • Has push button electronic ignition, hinged tank storage access door, easy roll mobility, built-in lid thermometer and easy clean residue tray

What I like

  • Unique innovative design
  • Has normal height despite being compact and takes very little footprint
  • While it may a bit while to preheat, it can still hit high temperatures

What I don't like

  • Has cooler spot on the center
  • Built-in thermometer isn’t very helpful in measuring its cooking temperature

Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living Gas Grill

Another entry for a small gas grill category is the Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living. With its name alone, you can already tell this one also aims to be compact. While this is obviously bigger than the Fuego, I can promise you that every space it’s taking up on your lawn, deck or patio is all worth it!

Dyna-Glo clearly bumped up in size but that’s only because it’s putting on more muscles. The Smart Space Living now sports with 3 powerful burners producing 12,000 of BTU’s per hour each, for a total of 36,000 BTU’s of cooking power! That’s more than efficient heat to get the grill ridiculously hot and FAST. You can pretty much get this to 300F for less than a minute and could even go as high as over 650F for just under 10 minutes.

On the flip side, the Dyna-Glo is not far different from Fuego in terms of even heat distribution. Wherein the back of the grill is way hotter than its front. You really ought to give your grill a run to get a feel for your grill and look out for any colder spots. Nevertheless, it got 2 heavy gauge porcelain-enameled cast iron, cooking grates which has excellent heat retention. It can sear foods and lock in the natural juice pretty swell.

Oh, and by the way, its 3 burners are made of commercial grade stainless steel which is an awesome upgrade in quality for the price. To assist its burners, there are also another three steel heat tents that protect the burners and flavor foods. And when I say it’s putting on muscles, not only is it more powerful but there’s also a noticeably wider cooking surface of 503 square inches. You can probably cook about 18 burgers at once. Plus, you can throw bigger barbecue parties now with its larger cooking area. And since it doesn’t take too much space in your home, you can actually have more friends over as well.

Another good thing about having 3 separate burners, you have a control knob for each. Hence, its infinite control valve options provide flexibility and the best grilling performance and experience for you. When you’ve got a hankering for a delicious grilled meal, starting it up is as easy as ABC with the Easy-Push Electronic Pulse Ignition that ensures a quick start-up. How’s that for a customized personal grilling experience?

Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living’s cover lid is also made of double wall stainless steel to help with retaining heat. It also has a temperature gauge attached to it. Finally, for your convenience, there are gorgeous steel side shelves with integrated towel bar and tool hooks so everything is within your reach. When you don’t need the side shelves, you can easily fold them down to save on space and it also makes it a lot easier to store when not in use! Mobility won’t be a problem here too since it has 2 dependable wheels that support the legs.

For grill lovers who have limited space for the machine, the Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living is an option you can’t simply ignore. While it indeed has become slightly bigger than a Fuego, its upgrades in cooking finesse and capacity make it hard to resist. It can even pass out as a strong contender for any full-sized grills available out there, making this a great choice for the best gas grills under 300 bucks. Its no-nonsense design makes great use of every space it takes up and packs every bit of a punch!

Here’s a Quick Recap of Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living Grill’s Sizzling Features

  • 3 Stainless steel commercial grade burners produce a total of 36,000 BTU’s
  • 3 Steel Heat tents protect the burners and flavor foods

  • Infinite control valve options provide flexibility and the best grilling performance and experience

  • Side shelves with integrated towel bar and tool hooks
  • Easy push-button electronic pulse ignition system

What I like

  • Large cooking space despite its compact package
  • Has great control over heat
  • Foldable side shelves save space

What I don't like

  • Some of its metal pieces are prone to rust and its paint job may chip off

Char-Broil Performance 550 Gas Grill

Going into the less-portable territory, the Char-Broil Performance 550 is definitely a power player in the gas grill world. With its larger frame, this is a great gas grill to have if you have the space for it. You get to bring home a full-sized backyard grill with little extra features to level-up your game.

Despite the size though, you can still easily roll this away with its two sturdy caster wheels. Once you’re ready to start grilling, starting up is also a lot simpler like the rest with its electronic ignition system that promises you reliable spark at every burner. You can easily tell when it’s ready for cooking with the handy-dandy temperature gauge built on the lid of the gas grill.

Given the price range, don’t expect this to be in a full stainless steel body nor will it be able to outlive a Weber. Nevertheless, the Char-Broil Performance is still well-built and could give you a good run for years. In fact, its burners, heat tents, lid, handle, control panel fascia and cabinet doors are stainless steel. In addition, it has large metal side shelves and a porcelain-coated cast iron grates. This coating adds a layer of protection to your grill grates against rust. It can also help prevent food from sticking.

This time, Char-Broil has veered away from a flimsy cart-style body to a double-door cabinet. The two-door cabinet offers plenty of storage space to keep all your essentials near and ready. This gorgeous gas grill also sports 5 powerful burners that are top-ported tube burners for lasting performance. Each has control knobs that provide more precise control over your grill’s hotness for direct and indirect grilling.

Now for the interesting part, you’ve got a really wide cooking surface of 550 square inches for your meats and other ingredients. It has, by far, the biggest cooking area among the gas grills on the list for the same price. You can easily throw a barbecue party for 5 to 8 of your peeps and grill about 24 burgers at once! If that’s not enough, you also have an additional 205 square inches of porcelain coated swing-away warming rack to keep your food warm and the party going.

Char-Broil Performance 550 can produce 45,000 BTU’s, which is just right for the size. While its lidded side burner is very convenient and can produce up to 10,000 BTU’s. It’s perfect for warming sauces or sautéing side dishes for your delicious barbecue meal. You can then fold down the lid to protect its burner and have an extra workspace when you no longer need to cook on it.

The Char-Broil Performance 550 deserves a big high-five for its splendid performance. While it’s rare to see a big sized grill below 300 bucks, yet Char-Broil makes it happen with its Performance 550. Truly a wonderful performance from Char-Broil and a huge bang for the bucks!

What I like

  • A 5-burner champ for the price
  • Better control precision over desired heat
  • Have enough burners perfect for direct and indirect grilling
  • Large cooking space
  • Has efficient firepower for the size

What I don't like

  • Instruction manual to assemble isn’t the easiest to comprehend
  • Some pieces can be prone to dents

The Round-Up

You really can’t go wrong with all these gorgeous choices. I’ll say it again, the best gas grills under 300 dollars are especially reliable. If you’re on to solid portable grills, Weber Q2200 is an easy choice. Can’t afford a bulky grill for your patio or decks? Then Fuego Element F21C is a fitting gas grill for your needs. While if you still prefer a more traditional looking gas grill but still wants to save space, the Dyna-Glo Smart Space Living makes the cut! Lastly, if you’re on to a full-grown grill for bigger parties and larger crowd, the Char-Broil Performance is an excellent choice.

You can be sure that you didn’t totally compromise quality for the price. You’ll be happier to see your 300-dollar grill all worn-out than see a $1000 grill just catching dust because you’ve overspent your budget on the machine. So now you can’t afford to buy the meats for it or simply can’t bring yourself to get the expensive unit worn-down too quickly. Regardless, a $300 budget can already get you a long way with a gas grill.

These grills assure you with tough materials to last for several seasons and can perform pretty well. So you can make no mistake with these as the best gas grill of your very own. But if you want to try looking around the web on your own first, you definitely have to consider a few factors on how to buy the right grill for you. Firstly, determine the space in your home for your grill. The last thing you want is getting a gas grill that’s just way too big for anywhere in your house. Determine the size that you need and think about the crowd you’re planning to feed. Will you be cooking for yourself, or have friends over frequently, or are you a big party person?

In addition, you want to think about the BTU rating of your gas grill. The BTU rating is the fire or heat distribution rating of your gas grill. It’s how hot your grill can become within a given amount of time. In conjunction with the BTU rating, you have to check if the material of your gas grill is durable enough to withstand the heat as well as the exterior elements it will have to deal with in your home. A lot of the grill newbies I know have encountered using powerful grills that are way too hot for the casing and it just ended up in a lot of heartbreak.

Assembly is also pretty important to check. Some gas grills can have a really complex assembly manual that could probably lead you to set up a fire hazard in your home. Or worse, you could never figure out how to assemble the darn thing. But fortunately, Amazon now offers assembly service for a fee. If you are a handy person, then good for you! But if not, then it’ll be wiser to take on this offer to save yourself the trouble and time for setting it up. I mean, come on, who won’t be too excited to try the shiny, new unit and fire up the grill right away? Because I know I will!

The Top Gas Grill Picks and Reviews

Char-Broil Performance Gas Grills

Starting off this list with one of the fan favorites, especially when it comes to affordability. Seriously, even the biggest grill aficionados are head over heels with this gas grill by Char-Broil. So much as earning its very own bestseller status on any review website. Over the years, Char-Broil has been pretty consistent with producing great gas grills that suit every customer’s price range which is really cool. But enough about the introduction of this product and the brand, let’s get to the nitty-gritty, shall we?

The Performance Gas Grill sports 4 powerful burners that provide better control to your cooking. These burners produce 36,000 BTU’s of heat, which means each burner produces up to 9,000 BTU’s. Personally, I feel that it doesn’t have the optimum heat efficiency to its cooking size. After all, more grills nowadays can produce up to 10,000 BTU’s for each burner. Nevertheless, it has more than enough firepower to satisfy your meat cravings anytime you want. It does an adequate job to get hot enough to sear mouth-watering steaks and even cook a 1″ thick cut to a perfect medium.

Added to all this firepower, you also got 475 square inches of primary cooking space. Plus, another 175 square inches of a secondary cooking area that features a swing away porcelain coated grill. You can use this whenever needed and swing away when you just want to use the primary grilling area. The really wide cooking area makes this particular machine more suitable if you plan on feeding larger crowds. While the warming rack will make it easier for you to preheat the buns and cook the sides for your meat. This gas grill is particularly wider so you also have the option to cook with a partner or on your own. Some people don’t like others touching their machines, so it’s all up to you.

In addition, it has a lidded side burner that produces 10,000 BTU’s. This provides an extra space to let you cook barbecue sauces or even more sides for your dishes. While if unneeded, you can just close the lid to protect the burner and use it for additional prep space. It’s a lovely piece of work that can handle lots of stuff going on at the same time. Just make sure you’re also adept at multitasking so you don’t end up burning any of your food or sauces.

The lower cooking surface also sports the same porcelain coated grill. It is perfect for retaining heat without any breakage in the material. There are also large, painted metal side shelves that are great for putting plates, cups, marinades, and even your tools. The lid, handles, control panel, and fascia are all of a stainless steel construction. So they’re not only stylish but also incredibly durable and low maintenance! Starting this gas grill is also a breeze with the electronic ignition system. This creates a reliable spark with every push. It’s a feature very popular among gas cooking appliances nowadays because of its convenience.

Speaking of convenience, this grill has cart-style built with 2 stationary legs for stability; and 2 7-inch wheels for mobility. You can easily wheel it around, while the legs will keep it in place when you’re done moving it. While starting is a breeze, I also love the hefty stainless steel knobs for adjusting the fire. They turn so smoothly but has enough resistance to ensure a more accurate cooking temperature.

The name says it all. Regardless of the price, you definitely will be going home with an excellent performing gas grill. It has more functional features and neat upgrades that can cater for your larger families to enjoy. The price is just a sweet bonus! After all, other well-known brands could offer the same features for twice the price.  Hence, it provides great value for your money-making it as one of the best gas grills under 200 dollars. With all these fantastic features, you won’t wonder why everyone loves this grill.

Char-Griller 3001 Grillin Pro Gas Grill

Another great contender that could give a run for your money is from Char-Griller. Char-Griller 3001 Grillin’ Pro has been around for years. So, they really do are the pros in this price range to last this long. It also has the cart-style built similar to Char-Broil Performance for the convenient mobility.

I’m not really sure why but this gas grill really reminds me of a time machine. It must be the dual stacks that project from the lid! Jokes aside though, the dual stacks that project from the lid are actually one of my favorite features on this awesome gas grill. With these projections, the heat is actually distributed more evenly as these allow excess heat and gases to seep out and even out the cooking field within the lid! After grilling, the dual stacks also provide a safer way to allow the heat to escape and cool down the gas grill itself without exposing a large cooking surface that could be hazardous.

Speaking of the cooking surface, the Char-Griller 3001 Griller Pro sports a very wide 438 square inches of main grilling area with porcelain coated cast iron grates. And if you think that’s not enough, there is also a 192 square inch warming rack to keep finished pieces of meat on! Although its size is just a shy smaller than Char-Broil’s, you can still easily serve a party of 4-6 peeps at the same time.

Now here gets interesting… Although the Char-Griller only has 3 stainless steel burners, it doesn’t lack in the heat department. In fact, when it comes to firepower, the Char-Griller burns its competitors to the ground. Not literally though. The Grillin’ Pro has a total of 40,800 BTU’s plus a side burner with a 12,000 BTU heat capacity. Its side burner works just the same with Char-Broil’s but this one has stronger heat strength. Cooking power alone is superb. Given the size of its cooking surface, paired with strong firepower, this machine has better heat efficiency. Meaning, it distributes heat across the surface more evenly, hits high temperature and gets hot REALLY FAST! The high BTU ratings are especially great for searing as well due to its strong heating capacity. Needless to say, this gas grill can pack quite the punch!

The body of this gas grill is made of a durable steel construction with side shelves and utensil hooks. They are perfect for putting plates, utensils, as well as bowls of sauces and marinades. When you’re just about ready to start grilling, starting this gas grill is as easy as pie with its electronic ignition. Though fair warning, igniters are usually the first ones to fail. But that just happens like in any other grills. There’s also a mounted thermometer on the lid to easily monitor the temperature of the grill and control the heat to your liking. Finally, once you’re done with your grilling, the Char-Griller is easy to move around with its large durable wheels.

In the end, you don’t really need to pay a lot of cash just so you can feel like a pro. Char-Griller Grillin’ Pro can be your best partner along the way to becoming a pro griller, without breaking the bank. With about 10 to 15 bucks difference, the Grillin’ Pro is a little pricier than the Char-Broil Performance. Nevertheless, you get a more powerful piece of machinery that can totally heat things up!

Here’s a Quick Recap of Char-Griller 3001 Grillin’ Pro’s Sizzling Features

  • Heavy Steel Construction with porcelain coated cast-iron grill grates
  • 40,800 BTU’s main burner and 12,000 BTU Side Burner
  • 438 sq. In. Cooking area with 192 sq. in. warming rack
  • Electronic Ignition
  • Durable powder-coated finish

What I like

  • Gets very hot and fast
  • Has high heat capacity and efficiency for its size
  • Also has lidded side burner

What I don't like

  • Propane tank compartment is quite difficult to reach

Coleman RoadTrip LXX Grill

Moving on to our final list is a little different from the rest. We’ve already got awesome choices for a traditional sized gas grill, so this time, we’re going for portable gas grills. Believe me, owning a portable grill makes the outdoors much more fun. Personally, I also own both a traditional sized and portable gas grills. But depending on your needs and lifestyle, I know people who just own a portable grill for all their grilling actions. And they’ve been more than happy for the experience. After all, you can still cook the same delicious grill recipes with the convenience of portability and easy storage.

When it comes to camping and outdoor gears, the first thing that pops to mind is Coleman. No surprise there, since Coleman has always been the hallmark for camping gears and all things for the great outdoors, including portable gas grills. In fact, they’ve been in the business of producing reliable gears through and through. So now they offer quite a number of options. But I’m a big fan of their RaodTrip series, wherein the LXX is the RoadTrip’s top of the line. The first thing you’ll quickly notice is just how incredibly portable it is. The Roadtrip LXX not only looks sleek as heck in black but is about to prove to you why it’s worth every penny! Let’s start with the construction of its body.

It’s made of brushed stainless steel which is not only shiny and swanky but also very durable and ideal for cooking. Every detail is designed with portability in mind. Therefore, staying true to the mobile trademark of Coleman, the Roadtrip LXX sports two wheels that can traverse any terrain. Keeping it in storage is also a breeze with its easy-to-operate collapsible legs. While setting up is just as quick and easy. Once set up, starting up this gas grill is super easy with Coleman’s trademark InstaStart matchless lighting system. You’ve also got a pair of handy-dandy stainless steel sliding side tables to keep tools and ingredients at the ready while they can also slide out-of-the-way when not in use.

As for cooking power, you’ve got a considerable 22,000 BTU’s on an extra large cooking surface of 285 square inches for a portable grill. If you’re just going to base it on numbers, its BTU would seem exponentially lower than the rest on the list. But that won’t be accurate. As a matter of fact, the LXX has great heat efficiency for its size. Its firepower is hot enough to thoroughly cover its cooking surface and get insanely hot fast!

Another noteworthy feature of the Coleman LXX is its cooktop. You can actually interchange it depending on your cooking needs with Coleman’s SwapTop series. Mix and match your grill to a griddle, and even to stove grates to give a very wide variety of outdoor cooking options. You just have to buy them separately though.

While the LXX can’t exactly do what fancier, free-standing, stainless steel gas grills can do. It can still grill your usual burgers, chicken, steaks, and hotdogs. But just not really large pieces of meat all in one go. It can also take slightly longer to cook them than with a standard backyard grill, but that’s to be expected. Nevertheless, you can easily serve food to your family or small circle of 3-4 people without a hitch. To make sure that your cooking is foolproof, the RoadTrip LXX also sports Coleman’s Perfect Flow technology which promises to provide consistent performance regardless of the weather conditions – even the most extreme situations!

Just a little shy away from 200 bucks, the RoadTrip LXX offers huge bang for your bucks over any other portable units. Not to mention, this sleek grill is brought to us by a trusted and long-tested brand, Coleman. So, it’s a no-brainer for me to include this as my best gas grills under 200 dollars. It’s perfect for people who don’t have large space to accommodate bigger grills. Or, simply because you want to extend the thrills of grilling outside your home!

Here’s a Quick Recap of Coleman RoadTrip LXX Grill’s Sizzling Features

  • Swaptop interchangeable cooktops for more meal options
    • choose from a griddle, full-size griddle, and stove grates, but are sold separately
  • InstaStart ignition for push-button, matchless lighting
  • Perfect Flow technology provides consistent performance, even in extreme conditions too
  • Collapsible stand with wheels folds for compact storage, as well as easy to transport
  • Stainless steel sliding side tables for tools and ingredients
  • 22,000 BTUs of fully adjustable cooking power on a 285 sq. in. cooking surface

What I like

  • Highly portable and easy to transport
  • Gets pretty hot
  • Has decent cooking area despite its compact size
  • Innovative Swaptop cooktop design

What I don't like

  • Sides of the grill doesn’t get as quickly hot as on the center
  • Side table may slide out while transporting it on wheels

The Round-Up

When looking to buy the best gas grills under 200 dollars, I personally like to do my research at home. Much like you’re doing right now too. This definitely helps rule out impulse buying as well as overspending. If you don’t feel like going from store to store and finding grills that aren’t keepers for you, you can always check a ton of online guides like this one for your utmost convenience! It’ll also be helpful if you’re knowledgeable on how to buy a grill to have a better understanding of your needs and make smarter purchases.

Although, we always start with setting a budget when we’re out to buy stuff. Of course, the price shouldn’t be the only factor that comes to mind when you go online to shop for your gas grill. The money you shell out isn’t everything, even though it’s definitely a big part of any purchase. You also have to take into consideration a bunch of other factors! One of the most important things to check out is the build quality of the gas grill. Is the material durable? Do you see yourself using it for years and years to come?

It’d be a shame if you got yourself a cheap little gas grill while you have to constantly take it out to get fixed. In addition, you have to check the cooking power and heat distribution of your gas grill. This would be the BTU rating of a gas grill which is especially relevant. So, the higher BTU rating means a stronger heat distribution capacity. As a result, you can determine if it can accommodate your grilling and cooking needs.

But take note though, a smaller BTU rating doesn’t necessarily mean that a gas grill won’t be able to cook as powerfully. A smaller BTU rating is usually coupled with a smaller cooking surface. This means it doesn’t need as much firepower to distribute heat because it only has a smaller area to distribute heat on. Another, you have to check for side tables and tool hooks. Because in my experience, these features have always come to my rescue. Thankfully, a lot of the gas grills on the market right now also have these. But it always pays to be thorough, after all!

Portability is also a big factor to consider when you live in smaller apartments or very much into tailgating. So make sure you get a gas grill that you can move around easily or fold into a smaller form for easy storage. The last thing you need is a big grill imposing in the middle of the room and taking up too much space. Of course, you could always take the shortcut and just pick one the best gas grills under 200 bucks I’ve named here and save yourself the trouble!

Now that we’re finally experiencing some decent sunny days, it is officially a perfect time to have your very own barbecue party with family and friends! Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case for a lot of people in this economy. It really sucks when you can’t have your very own barbecue because of a number of obstacles – a less than desirable budget on hand, for one.

Unlike a lot of the big grillers out there, we can’t all have the bucks to shell out for a big swanky grill to feed tens of people. So a lot of us settle for store-bought meals and takeout. Of course, a budget isn’t the only reason why we can’t have the dreamy steel grills we want. People who live in cities and apartment buildings also have a harder time with this, because they can’t exactly set a big imposing grill and start smoking up the place.

Also, it is super tough to find a great gas grill that can fit in more limited spaces like a small balcony or kitchen. Lastly, the trickiest thing about looking for a more budget-friendly gas grill is the fear that a more affordable gas grill means getting an appliance where manufacturers skimped on a lot of the good stuff to produce. There’s also the feeling of compromising quality for the lowered price. Added to these, getting the wrong gas grill could mean replacing parts over and over because of poor quality and performance.

Here’s the thing though, what if I told you that I knew about a few grills that aren’t just easy on the budget but also perform extremely well for their price? Moreover, what if I told you that you could absolutely find the best gas grills under 100 dollars? Yup, you definitely read that right: less than a hundred bucks! Not only are these pretty good at grilling, they’re also slightly more compact than the average gas grill so you can expect them to fit in slightly tighter spaces! So read on to learn all about the best gas grills under 100 dollars that you can get your hands on today!

The Top Gas Grill Picks and Reviews

Char-Broil Classic 280 2-Burner Gas Grill

Char-Broil is a household name when it comes affordable grills. Despite having a low price tag, doesn’t automatically mean they’re substandard and useless junks. Although I can’t deny they do have few flimsy grills around. Time and again, Char-Broil still able to deliver us reliable and well-featured grills for less than its actual value. A good example is the Char-Broil Classic 280.

Classic is exactly the word that is perfect for this beautiful gas grill. This grill sports a durable porcelain-coated aluminum body in a cool dark steely color that fits any home. Aside from looking cool and durable, this porcelain coating makes the Char-Broil Classic 280 quite resistant to the elements.

It has 2 burners with a grilling power of 26,500 BTUs. While its considerably expansive 280 square inches of cooking surface on porcelain-coated wire grates are ideal for grilling. With a cooking area this size, you can pretty much feed a small family or average of 3 to 4 people easily. You can cook about 8 fat burger patties simultaneously or even a dozen of hotdogs. Hosting intimate gatherings will be your thing. And no matter how often you want, you can easily do so with a snap! Thanks to a Classic grill for a classic event.

Ensuring that you have a lot of your grilling essentials within reach, this gas grill also offers plastic side shelves for extra space with built-in handles and tool hooks for your cooking utensils and cleaning tools. The built-in handles are especially handy for moving this gas grill around especially with the help of the 6” wheels! Slow start-ups are never an issue with this gas grill. Starting this gas grill is made a breeze with the Piezo ignition system for that reliable spark that never fails.

This grill also comes with a sturdy steel lid and firebox also clad in the same durable porcelain coating. However, if there is something to look out for about this gas grill is that the use of light materials can make it seem a bit flimsy so just be careful not put too many things at once. Other than that, you’re pretty much set with this classic beauty!

I admit, there isn’t a lot of Wow factor here. It’s called Classic for the reason that it got all common features of a basic grill for a good price. But what’s pretty cool here is it works and looks like a traditional-sized grill, which makes this the best gas grills under 100 dollars. You can no longer easily find a free-standing gas grill for a price of 100 bucks. If you’re new to the grilling scene or simply constrained by budget, Char-Broil Classic 280 makes a wonderful choice. Your grilling and food cravings are sure to be satisfied!

Here’s a Quick Recap of Char-Broil Classic 280’s Sizzling Features

  • 280 square inches of cooking space over porcelain-coated grates
  • Two stainless steel in-line burners for cooking performance
  • Porcelain-coated steel lid and firebox stand up to weather and the elements
  • Metal side shelves measure 12-inches w x 13-inches l providing extra storage and prep space

  • Can last for many seasons with routine care
  • Has high heat capacity and efficiency for its size

What I don't like

  • Challenging to assemble
  • No warming rack

Char-Broil Classic 360 3-Burner Gas Grill

Here’s another great piece by Char-Broil! Coming from the Classic line as well, the Classic 360 makes for a strong contender in the $100 category. And since they’re both from the Classic line, some of its specs are similar. But this one is slightly more expensive by around 10 bucks with few upgrades to look forward to.

I know how we get our hands itching to try new stuff that we buy. And luckily for us, this thing won’t take a whole day to set up! Upon unboxing this little beauty, it takes only about an average of an hour or so to put it together. You can then start grilling in absolutely no time at all!

Now to the juicy part – its grilling capacity! For one thing, I know you’ll clearly love how the Classic 360 sports a hefty 30,000 BTUs of heat output from its 3 stainless steel burners. This one has better heat efficiency than the Classic 280. This means it distributes heat across its surface more evenly and faster.

It also has a wider cooking area of 360 square inches. It is more than you need to grill your favorite dishes with the use of porcelain coated wire grates. And better yet, this one comes with a 170 square inches of warming rack! Which I personally find handy to keep our cooked food warm or heat buns at the same time.

It may not be big enough for a block party, but it sure is perfect for a small to medium family. You can cook a lot of dishes at the same time with the medium-sized grilling area. While the BTU rating assures you that it gets hot fast. You don’t have to wait a while for the grill to be hot enough for you to start cooking. Plus, it definitely gets REALLY hot!

One of my favorite things about it is its good control of heat. Since it got 3 burners with individual knobs for each, you have better control over your cooking style. It can also hit high temperature and has good heat retention. This means that you can actually cook your usual dishes in low settings. So not only will you be spending less for a grill, you’d also be able to save more on its fuel since this gas grill won’t be a propane hog.

Due to its modest price tags, Its inline burners are the only ones with stainless steel material. Its overall body though is only made of plain steel. Not to mention, its firebox is supported with metal legs that don’t appear to be very thick. So it may not seem to be the sturdiest around, but it still has nice support. And it’s going to be sturdy enough to last you for a couple of grilling seasons and years to come. Just make sure to properly maintain this and keep it clean every after use to protect its materials from rusting. Fortunately, this one is rather easy to clean!

For your added convenience, metal side shelves offer extra workspace, so you never need to worry about running back and forth for your grilling tools or even reaching far for your meat plates, bowls of marinades and sauces. The durable porcelain-coated steel lid and firebox are designed to withstand the harmful outdoor elements – all the while ensuring your own gas grill isn’t going to be a hazard to your home.

For added mobility, the Classic 360 3-burner gas grill also has 2 sturdy 6” wheels. Repositioning this gas grill will be a complete cakewalk.

While the Classic 360 actually retails above the hundred-dollar mark, you can usually find it being sold at just a shy away from hundred bucks. So if you do find it at this lower price point, you better grab that chance because it’s truly an awesome deal you shouldn’t miss. For the same $100 budget, you can already get a basic free-standing gas grill with 3 burners, a bigger cooking space, and a warming rack! While adding an extra 30 to 40 bucks could go as far as having a side burner available on your Classic 360.

The Char-Broil Classic 360 3-Burner Gas Grills is a solid choice for your $100 budget. It has all the necessities covered. It can easily cater to a small family without breaking a sweat and doesn’t break the bank when you’re just starting out to practice your grilling skills. The Classic 360 is a basic free-standing grill that makes your hundred bucks twice its worth!

Here’s a Quick Recap of Char-Broil Classic 360 Gas Grill’s Sizzling Features

  • 360 square inches of cooking space over porcelain-coated grates
  • 170 square inch porcelain-coated swing-a-way rack for warming
  • Three stainless steel in-line burners produce 30,000 BTUs of heat

Cuisinart CGG-180TS Petit Gourmet Portable Gas Grill

This next one is actually a personal favorite of mine! I’ve always had a love for Cuisinart appliances because they’ve got a knack for producing a lot of useful appliances. They aren’t only known for the great performance but are also pretty stylish. They certainly know how to keep the modern consumer happy. Albeit pricey at times, Cuisinart appliances almost always promise value for money and the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas Grill is no exception.

I would also like to note that the Petit Gourmet grill is part of Cuisinart’s most affordable appliances but still is powerful enough to face off with some of the best budget gas grills out there. In terms of portability and compactness, this little beauty by Cuisinart no doubt takes the cake! It can fit almost anywhere and is absolutely perfect for people who live in places with more limited spaces.

You can actually just use this in a well-ventilated kitchen if you want. You don’t have to expose yourself to the sun for too long. Or if you’re more of an outgoing person, you can also bring this anywhere with you due to its compact size. You can grill at your friend’s place, at the park or camping sites. You can practically grill anywhere you go. Well, as long as the locations you visit allow it…

Take note though, since this is a smaller tabletop gas grill, you can’t expect it to pack the same heat as a standalone gas grill. The Petit Gourmet sports 5,500 BTUs of cooking power on 145 square inches of grilling surface. Despite having lower heat output and cooking space, this is definitely not something to scoff at. The grilling power on this thing is more than enough to grill your favorite dishes. You just have to cook in smaller quantities, which can fit not more than 8 burgers at once.

The Petit Gourmet is more than capable of cooking your own cravings or really small family, and not exactly for huge crowds. This grill is definitely more suited for urbanites as it is so easy to put out and start and you’d pretty much be ready to grill chicken, pork, or even vegetables.

However, if there is a category where the CGG-180TS Petit Gourmet Portable absolutely kicks ass, it is definitely its built quality. Unlike most gas grills in the market, this has a design that sports a gorgeous stainless steel body for a bit higher price. It is not only resistant to adverse elements but is also ideal for retaining heat and is also incredibly low maintenance. But even if you opt for its colored alternatives, it still has a solid built made of steel with stainless steel burners. The grill grates itself are of a porcelain enamel which makes it quite durable and ideal for cooking.

There is handy lid latch to ensure safety as well as a spill-resistant drip tray to keep your grilling experience as free of messes as possible! Other than build quality, this gas grill capitalizes on efficiency in gas usage. It is noted to use far less gas than most gas grills on the market. While its incredible portability is just the icing on the cake!

Although the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet is not a free-standing grill like the Char-Broil gas grills, it packs quite a punch in small package. Plus, you also have to consider its brand. It is by Cuisinart after all. Best of all, you have the option to use it independently. You don’t have to place it on top of a table as long as you purchase it with a stand. It will only set you back just slightly above the hundred-dollar budget.

The beauty of owning a Cuisinart Petit Gourmet makes it so you’re not limited to just grill in your backyard. This is the most suitable choice if you simply have the knack for the outdoors, tight budget and limited space at home. It brings not only power but also versatility in your grilling arsenal! Hence, the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet is a perfect fit for the best gas grills under 100 dollars.

Here’s a Quick Recap of Cuisinart Petit Gourmet’s Sizzling Features

  • Pronounced briefcase-style carrying handle and weighs 13.5 pounds

What I like

  • Compact and very portable
  • Heats up fast

What I don't like

  • Tough to get it very hot especially in windy conditions

The Round-Up

So you see, it doesn’t take big bucks to get a great grill! The best gas grills under 100 dollars are more than enough to fulfill the needs of those who are on a tighter budget. If you want all the essentials covered for a great price, then the Char-Broil Classic 360 is your best choice. But if you don’t need the extra cooking space and just want to save more, then the Classic 280 may be enough for you. On the other hand, the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet is perfect if you love to grill not just in one place!

Although a lot of us fear that getting a more affordable grill will mean that we chose to compromise on a lot of good features. But this is will never be the case with enough research. It’s also really worth noting that price does not equal value. It doesn’t necessarily mean that getting a more expensive gas grill means a better performing grill. So remember to always read up on the features and specifications of a gas grill. Moreover, you also have to regularly upkeep your grill to its tip-top shape. Because no matter how expensive your grill is, if not properly maintained will deteriorate fast.

There are also other factors to consider when looking to buy the best gas grill. One is by checking the BTU rating of the burners. Because knowing this lets you know the maximum heat distribution capacity of your grill. Then, you should also check the materials used for manufacturing the grill. This is to see if it’s durable and can contribute to your whole cooking experience.

Extra features are always welcome! Look for a grill that can do more than the average gas grill. A lot of brands now are very competitive with extra features such as searing areas and rotisseries. However, you should be careful about getting an affordable grill with a lot of extra purposes because chances are the manufacturers skimped on material quality to create more features. Shopping on a budget can always be tricky but with all these tips in mind, you can never go wrong.

It’s finally that time of the year when the sun’s out and we can all finally go around town in the most fuss-free clothes and meet up with our family and friends; basically have all the fun that we couldn’t during the colder months. Indeed, summer is finally here and one of the most fun activities anyone could ever do? Have a big summer barbecue! After all, who doesn’t love a big juicy steak or burger to go with an ice-cold drink in the summer? I’m definitely a fan.

But of course, a barbecue party won’t be complete without the grilled meats! It’s probably the most significant part of any summer party, aside from booze. You need a great tool to cook on and having a good grill can mean the difference between a summer fiesta and a summer fiasco.

If you still don’t own a grill or looking to replace it, it might be a good idea to buy now before summer arrives. And if this is your first time buying one then before dealing with what model or brand, you first need to know how to buy a grill. Not just any kind or you’ll end up with junk and just burn through your cash. You need to know how to look for a good grill and what makes its features a great value for your money.

There are tons of things to consider when you finally decide to shop around and they’re all equally important. It’s not just about the price and how pretty and shiny a gas grill is! So let me give you tips on how to buy a grill!

Here are some of the most important factors on what makes a good grill that you have to keep in mind when shopping, especially on a gas grill.

How to Buy a Grill & What to Look for in a Grill

PriceFor whatever things we buy, we’re always limited by a budget. So you definitely have to first determine how far you’re willing to go for your grill in terms of the price. Are you a budget shopper? Are you looking for something mid-range? Or are you the shopper that consistently says money is no object?

Although it isn’t always the case that higher price means better performance. Usually as far as gas grills go, higher price usually means better build quality and materials as well as more extra features. Though nowadays, manufacturers discover better, cheaper alternatives everyday and you can also probably find great gas grills that suit you for way less than the top of the line ones that you were previously eyeing.

Once you’ve figured out the price range you’re willing to shell out for that new gas grill, you can now narrow down the products available for you. You can then decide for the extra features you’ll need and want for a grill. If you’re looking for a tabletop or portable gas grills, you can get one for just a hundred to hundred eighty bucks. While you can already have a pretty cool basic grill for just under 300 bucks. For those with bigger families will require more burners and bigger cooking space, so that may set you back for not more than $1000. Now if you have some cash to burn and be the envy of your friends, $2000 budget can already get you a long way! You can own a shiny new branded grill with all the nitty-gritty specs you’ll really need plus the extra frills!

Branded or not, what’s important is to always remember to set a budget for yourself because this helps weed out unnecessary temptation and spending. It always pays to shop responsibly, after all!

FuelHaving a barbecue is fun and nothing is more satisfying than smelling the aroma of sizzling meat paired with vegetables for the amazing meal that you’re preparing. But have you ever thought about the fuel that you’ve used up to create your sumptuous dishes?

There are 6 common fuel sources for your grill which are charcoal, gas, logs, wood pellets and electric. Each of them have their own merits and can cook remarkably.  However, if you really want to make the most out of your grill and find yourself wanting to cook steaks and other red meat most often, then you will need a charcoal or gas grill. You will need high heat for searing and this is achieved by having either of the two. Now don’t get me started on which of the two should you get, it will take us forever to decide on who’s the winner for the charcoal vs gas debate.

Now if you decide gas grills to be more convenient for you, there are 2 kinds of fuel you can choose from. You can either opt for a liquid propane (LP) or a natural gas grill. You cannot buy a gas grill that can use both liquid propane and natural gas at the same time. So if you buy a propane gas grill, expect to only use propane gas to cook foods with it. Although you can buy conversion kits that can switch your ordinary propane grill to natural gas grill.

Now if you’re wondering whether to buy a propane or natural gas grill, I’d always suggest you to go for natural gas grills, especially if you already have a natural gas line hooked up to your home. They just have more benefits and when it comes to being more eco-friendly as well, natural fuels are the way to go. After all, we live in an environmentally troubled time, so if there are options to lessen any harmful effects to our nature then let’s support in any way we can! Nevertheless, buying either one of these gas fuels will still boil down to your needs and lifestyle. If you can’t have access to natural fuel, then LPG grill is your best choice.

Always be sure to closely study the type of fuel that a specific gas grill needs. You can also consider which has more efficient fuel consumption for a gas grill. Also, it helps to know if the fuel is readily available in your area in case you run out.

workmanshipGoing back to what I said about considering the price of the grill, it always helps to determine the value that you’re getting for the money that you’re shelling out. Remember: value does not equal price. So how to buy a grill where you get what you paid for and possibly more? You find out if a grill is worth it by looking at the level of workmanship of a particular grill.

Does it have a solid built with proper welding and no sharp edges? What materials were used? Does it also have thick metals, sturdy legs, tough large wheels and well-fitted hinges and latches? These are just some of the questions you need to ask when looking on a new grill. If you’re seeing it personally, try shaking it a bit to see how it feels. It should feel solid and sturdy, and not wobble easily. You know a grill is built well when nothing shakes and everything feels hefty and firm.

While some grills are also coated with paint, so make sure it has good paint job and will not get chipped off easily as they also work as an added protection to the grill.

Grill MaterialsThe popular choice to date are made with thick stainless steel bodies as these are more durable, easier to upkeep and have better resistance against rust. You can say that rust is like the cancer of any grill. So having a tough exterior, high-grade and thick stainless steel materials can assure longer life for your grill. However, stainless steel gas grill are expensive to own. But if money will not be an issue and you definitely want one as well, then get a stainless steel that is nonmagnetic because they will not corrode fast. Another is to find one with 304 grade and contains more chromium and nickel in the alloy for tougher built, made to last longer.

Top of the line grills are usually made with stainless steel, cast aluminum, cast iron and enamel-bonded steel which are all of high quality materials, but are still totally not rust-free. A cast-iron that is not properly painted and an enamel-bonded steel that has its coating already chipped off are both already susceptible to rust.

The best alternative to expensive materials such as stainless steels is to buy grills that are made with cast aluminum and steel. They are reasonably priced, retains heat well and are also easy to upkeep. However burners are the heart of a grill, so make sure to at least invest on a gas grill that has stainless steel or brass-made burners.

As for the grill grates, you can find one that are made of stainless steel as well or cast iron. They are also usually coated with chrome, nickel, and porcelain. Cast-iron grates have nice heat conduction and thus leaves nice grill marks. However, you will have to oil it regularly for maintenance and preventive measure against rust.

For more affordable units, they usually coat their grates with porcelain which makes maintenance so fast and easy. Porcelain also has great heat and chemical resistance which is why a lot of manufacturers prefer it to this very day, while professionals love it for its perfection on leaving beautiful grill marks! Although they are rather heavy so you will just have to be extra careful in handling them to avoid chipping or cracking them accidentally.

The bolts and screws used should also be of the same strong steel. Also, it pays to have rubberized edges to avoid any painful bumping.

SafetyLuckily for us, the law now requires all appliances to have some sort of safety protocol. Like with water heaters, if it short-circuits or something goes terribly wrong in its mechanism, any sort of explosion will contain within the device. The same concept is applied to all gas grills but manufacturers have approached these malfunction fail-safes in their own unique way.

When you pick a grill, you should also try to picture yourself using it and try to imagine what would happen in the unlikely case that something goes wrong. Try to think about how you would go about such a sticky situation and how you would want your grill to react to the mishap. Pick the grill with the malfunction or fire protocol that you’re most comfortable with.

The materials used in making the grill itself are usually of a high fire rating, meaning it will take a very long time before it starts to burn. So make sure to thoroughly check if the grill’s materials are high-grade and thick enough to make sure it won’t get burned easily. Grease pans should also be kept at the right place and be easily accessible for cleaning to prevent flare ups.

In the case of an accident, a gas grill made of materials with high fire ratings will burn very slowly, giving your family enough time to vacate the premises while better-equipped people help you out. Having a baking soda around while grilling are great for putting small grease fires out. Though for larger fires, a fire extinguisher is your best weapon so invest on one as well to be safe. Though I’m pretty sure it won’t come to this, but better safe than sorry, right?

Cooking Grill surfaceThe gas grill that you pick would, of course, have to address how many people you’re planning to serve. How many people you often cook for is directly variable to the cooking area or surface that you’re working with; a bigger grilling area can make cooking for larger crowds a lot easier, while having a big grilling surface but only serving a small family or group could be a waste of resources.

So let’s say you often host a backyard barbecue parties, then make sure to invest on a large grill. While occasional cookouts for small and intimate group, a small grill is enough to do the job and will also save you the extra bucks.

Be sure to pick a gas grill that fits the crowd you feed by checking the size of the cooking area as well as the preparation surfaces. You can easily estimate if the size of the grill is appropriate for your family. You can do so by checking on the main cooking area which should be in square inches and usually provided under product’s details. Then divide the area by 72, the total will be your estimate for the number of people your grill can cook for simultaneously.

As an example, if the cooking area of the grill is 285 sq. in. then we divide it by 72, we’ll have an equation like this: 285 sq. in. ÷ 72 = 3.95. By rounding it off to 4, this gives us a quick estimate, we can then say that the grill can cook food for 3-4 people at the same time.

While if you plan to smoke large food items such as turkey, you can do so with a large gas grill. By large I mean one where there is at least a space to fit one head between the heating surface and the inside of the lid or hood of the grill, then you will have enough space to smoke such food.

When doing the computation for grill’s capacity to cook for each person simultaneously, make sure to only apply this to the area of the main cooking grate, not the total cooking size that manufacturers tend to inform us. Since they also include the size of warming surfaces to the total cooking area of the grill to make it look bigger. Nevertheless, having extra cooking surfaces like warming racks are very handy to have.

DimensionIt can be troublesome to have a grill that can’t seem to fit anywhere in your home so be sure to take measurements around your house beforehand to find the perfect spot for where you want your future grill to be. You have to take into consideration the level of ventilation, distance from flammable materials, and convenience of that particular area. Then after you take measurements of the available space for your grill, you can go shopping for one!

Although, there are some apartment buildings, condominiums or multi-family dwellings that only allow a specific type of grill you can use or has a distance requirement to follow for fire safety measures that you have to take note of before getting an oversized grill. In some places have even totally prohibited using of grills on balconies and decks such as in Connecticut. Building requirements seem to be more lenient towards using electric grills.

Still, make sure to check the fire code in your building and ask permission from your property owner(s) or fire marshals in your area before you swipe your credit card. Be sure to also check the size of the grill in the product’s descriptions and specifications to see if it matches your measurements or not.

HIGH HEAT CAPACITY (Temperature and BTU per Area)

BTU per Area temperatureCan’t make delicious steaks or juicy burgers without the right kind of heat! If you’re a steak lover and want to perfectly cook red meat with a nice crisp dark crust and red to pink doneness on the inside, even on thin steaks, you will want a grill that can get really hot! This is where British Thermal Unit (BTU) comes in.

BTU refers to the heat output of your unit. This means that the higher BTU of the grill, the higher levels of heat it can produce. However, having high BTU doesn’t automatically qualify the unit as the best choice because you also have to consider its cooking size. If the BTU level is too low for the size, then the grill may not produce enough heat to cook the food the way you want. While having too high BTU for a small cooking area can often generate too much heat and overcook your food and nobody also wants that.

So when you shop for a gas grill, you should definitely check its BTU rating and do a bit of calculating. The BTU/AREA rating determines how your grill efficiently distributes heat throughout its cooking surface over a specific unit of area. Ideally, a gas grill with 80 to 100 BTUs per square inch, or close to that heat ratio range, has good heat efficiency and can pretty much handle all your grilling needs. While 60 to 80 BTUs are more than enough for an infrared grill.

In addition, having a precise control on your grill’s temperature can make a difference to the taste and success of your cooking.  Cooking meats directly at high heat for too long will shrink its proteins, thus, leaving us with a hard and dry meat. So, gas grills, excluding portable ones, are recommended to have a minimum of 2 burners. This will allow you to create a 2-zone setup for direct and indirect cooking. Or if you have more burners, which is a plus, you can have low, medium and high heat zones for your cooking.

However, we don’t want to have hot and cold spots on your grill so watch out for burners that are too far apart. Distributing even heat across the cooking surface with good temperature control is the key to superb cooking and grilling experience.

FeaturesDon’t cheat yourself out of features that all gas grills in this day and age should have! After all, your gas grill is an investment and you should always aim to get one that gets you value for your money. Nowadays, almost any gas grill on the market has a built-in compartment for your gas tank as well as storage for starter fluid. There are also handy-dandy shelves that stretch out from the sides where you can place your plates of cooked and uncooked meats, and even your sauces and marinades!

Somewhere on the sides, there is usually a small convenient rack for cleaning rags, spatulas, tongs, or meat picks. Manufacturers usually have their own approach to these racks. Some create beautiful nodes on the body of the grill while some just put small hangers on the edge of the grill’s sides. These are the bare minimums of any gas grill in the market today.

While if having a side burner doesn’t cost too much of a difference, I would always suggest you to get one, specifically the one with flip down covers. After all, side burners are starting to become more of a staple among gas grills similar to how mobile phones have WiFi built-in on them. Having a side burner is an add-on convenience for warming up a sauce or cooking the sides like beans, corns, rice or whatever while grilling. And if you aren’t using the burner, you can still maximize it by using it as a table or extra space for your plates and stuff.

Grill WarrantyAll items we buy should always come with a warranty. But better grills comes with at least 5 years of free service and even on its assembly parts. There are gas grills that come with a separate warranty for each parts of the grill such as burner, ignition system and exterior body; so if the one you’d get comes with such a warranty arrangement, make sure to clear this with a sales representative or have a clear guide on it. The warranty should provide you everything that you’ll need from it.

In addition, make sure you’re buying from a well-reputed brand and good customer service. Because what’s the point of having long warranty if you can’t reach the company to avail it. You should be able to easily find the company’s customer support hotline and clear instructions for what to do in the event that you’d need new parts.

Extra Grill FeaturesIt is always a fun experience when something you own goes the extra mile and goes from an ordinary object to a great one. Today, the competition between manufacturers have become quite intense. Everyone always has something different and cool for you to try – extra features that you will scream, jump, and holler for joy. This is especially important for different brands because it’s what will set them apart from each other and can put you to a whole new level of grilling experience!

Some high-end grills have an extra burner for a searing area while some have a nifty little compartment to keep your meats fresh, and some have a cool convenient little waste chute. I call them as extra features as the sad thing about them is that they tend to be quite exorbitant and make a grill go way over your budget even though you can actually get by and still grill without these “extras“. However, if the budget permits, you should definitely look for a gas grill with as many extra features as you can! You never know how handy they will come to you when the time comes! There are just way too many extra features to name so I’ll just give you the ones that I feel are probably the most useful.

If you’re totally serious about having steaks every day and night, you gotta have a sear burners. You’ll get to cook a mouth-watering steaks with beautiful sear marks that you might unconsciously do the Italian fingertips kiss gesture for your perfect steak! Next one would be a smoker because with a smoker, you can also create delicious cured dishes aside from steaks and burgers. Can you imagine having a platter of salmon or pastrami to go with your summer parties? Amazing!

You should also check for infrared burners as this will definitely diversify the way you can prepare and cook your food, because with infrared burners, you can cook more delicately as well as more evenly with heat that comes in electromagnetic waves. Lastly, look for a gas grill with its very own rotisserie! Thanksgiving won’t be complete without a rotisserie turkey. So why just grill and sizzle when you can do a delicious roast as well?
